Her Excellency the Ambassador Petra Pereyra paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dithapelo L. Keorapetse to solidify ties and relations. The Ambassador highly commended Botswana for showing commitment in upholding democratic principles as shown by peaceful transition of power, rule of law, and sustained multi-party democracy. She further congratulated the Hon. Dithapelo on his new role of Speakership. The Ambassador expressed her intentions to collaborate with Botswana Parliament to strengthen the already existing relations as well as exploring other possible areas for effective cooperation.
The Speaker, Hon. Keorapetse appreciated the Ambassador's kind words and highlighted EU as an all-time development partner with Botswana. The Speaker pointed out that the current government is Human Rights based one, which will shape development agenda, laws and policies in that regard. Hon. Keorapetse emphasized the mandate of Parliament as legislative, oversight role,and representation. He, however noted that currently, the Parliament of Botswana needs more resourcing and capacitation in order to fully discharge its mandate. The Speaker was adamant that the active partnership between EU and Parliament will assist with strengthening the capability of the institution to effectively perform its duties. The two leaders agreed in unison that there is a need for more engagements to draw action plans that will strengthen cooperation between the EU and Botswana Parliament. Publications
