The Chairman of Ntlo Ya Dikgosi (NYD) Kgosi Malope II received the Ambassador of the United States of America (USA) to Botswana, His Excellency Mr. Howard A. Van Vranken in a courtesy call this morning. The Ambassador recognised the long standing history of collaboration between the United States of America and Botswana. He went on to indicate that he recognises the critical role played by dikgosi in Botswana and said, they have in the past worked with them on issues of training, citing training on Gender Based Violence as one of such trainings. Kgosi Malope II, appreciated the Ambassador for recognising the work they do of building communities. He explained that dikgosi have contributed significantly to the peaceful Botswana that we see today. He shared that before being members of Ntlo Ya Dikgosi they serve as traditional leaders of their respective communities in Botswana governed by Bogosi Act. He further indicated that while serving in their communities as dikgosi, some of their roles among others include; the promotion of the welfare of the members of their tribes, carrying out any lawful instructions given by the Minister, convening kgotla meetings to obtain advice as to the exercise of his or her functions, and presiding over cases in terms of the warrant of their court issued under the Bogosi Act. Kgosi Malope II, explained that while at Ntlo Ya Dikgosi, they perform legislative functions as per the Constitutional mandate of the House. He said Ntlo Ya Dikgosi accords Batswana to democratically air their views in an apolitical space. Kgosi Malope II indicated that, Ntlo Ya Dikgosi performs its legislative functions by asking questions and debating motions on issues of National interest and they also discuss Bills referred to the House by Parliament. Upon considering the Bills, they communicate their resolutions to Parliament. β€˜Although Parliament is not bound to accept our resolutions, we pride ourselves with the fact that we never had any of our resolutions rejected to date’, he said. He further shared that the Ambassador’s visit comes at a time when they would like to transform the House and make it relevant to the current times.
