The Ministry for State President, Defence and Security appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to account for its financial performance for the 2022/2023 financial year. During the examination, the Committee sought progress updates on the payment of military veterans, the establishment of the Sex Offenders Register, the constitutional review process and the funding of all political parties. Members also requested updates on the disbursement of funds for the creative industry to the relevant Ministry, the contract of Steve Harvey’s Botswana Ignite Project, government support for caregivers of people living with disabilities and the transformation of the national broadcasting service into a public broadcaster. Responding to the Committee, Acting Permanent Secretary Mr. Jerry Makgwa stated that the Ministry is in consultation with the Ministry of Finance on the way forward regarding Steve Harvey’s Botswana Ignite Project contract, taking into account the current state of the economy. He further stated that the establishment of the Sex Offenders Register is still underway and involves consultations with relevant government departments. In its resolutions, the Committee urged the Ministry to strengthen support for persons with disabilities and their caregivers, review the implementation of the Steve Harvey Botswana Ignite Project and expedite the resolution of all outstanding matters.
