Leader of the Opposition (LOO), Honourable Dumelang Saleshando received the British High Commissioner in a courtesy call this morning. Hon. Saleshando shared that they saw totally different results in the last election. He said Botswana has gone through one of the key tests and that the transition proved to be smooth. 'I think that the greater focus now will be on how we strengthen our democratic institutions', he said. He went on to say, in a number of scores, countries that gained their independence after Botswana ranked better. He lamented that Parliament of Botswana has one of the lowest female representation since independence saying, we have regressed in some aspects and that, it needs to be looked into. Hon. Saleshado shared that the good thing is, generally there is consensus amongst the two sides of the house on what reforms are needed. He cited the electoral system as one of the issues on the table explaining that they want to do away with first past the post system and try a system that can bring in more women. For his part, the British High Commissioner, HE. Mr. Giles Eliot Enticknap said the United Kingdom has been a long-standing partner of Botswana. He stated that since his arrival, they are seeking to thicken and deepen this relationship. He said in essence, they are trying to explore how the UK can support Botswana to diversify. HE. Mr. Giles Enticknap shared that the British Council would like to do a lot more in the energy space. On the issue of strengthening institutions, the High Commissioner said they are interested in how they can partner in that regard, whether through support to Parliament through exchanges. He further said his role is to ensure that people from the UK have Botswana in mind when they think of investing. The High Commissioner said he was interested to hear how Hon. Saleshando see the current parliament, the challenges ahead and expectations. In response, Leader of Opposition said, like he alluded at the beginning, there are areas of convergence and there is consensus in some issues from the two sides of the house, that is, the ruling and the opposition parties. One of the issues he said was green energy. 'The President in his State of the Nation Address and the Vice President in his Budget speech came out strongly around the issue of going green, this has always been an issue that we endorse wholeheartedly’, he said. As a Member of Parliament representing a constituency where most big businesses rely on solar than on Botswana Power Cooperation because it’s in the delta. It is an area that sets itself apart when it comes to embracing solar as part of their energy mix. He shared that, he has always wanted the low hanging fruits around this issue. Hon. Saleshando explained that he has been trying to bring it down to the very basic to say, if you can have your very small solar operators. He further shared that we have a system where you can do a connection to your house, even though you have a normal line connection system. The update has been low and he said it’s something that he wants to encourage even though they are challenges they still need to address.
